A Review of Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints (TOC)
– lessons from the international literature

by Steven J. Balderstone and Victoria J. Mabin, from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

Many claims have been made regarding the benefits of TOC by consultants who could benefit if those results become exaggerated. In this first-of-a-kind independent academic review, researchers surveyed 78 live TOC implementations from around the world to verify their impact and effectiveness.

The sample demonstrated remarkable improvements in cycle-time, due-date performance, inventory levels and sales revenue.

Continuous Improvement Trio
The top elements of TOC, lean, and six sigma
make beautiful music together

By Reza M. Pirasteh, PhD and Kimberly S. Farah, PhD

A fascinating case study of a large global electronics contract manufacturer with 21 plants, 45,000 employees and 211 team leaders. The company created an experiment to enable the business to establish TLS as its foremost approach to continuous improvement.
  • 11 plants applied six sigma
  • 4 plants applied lean
  • 6 plants applied TLS (TOC, Lean and Six Sigma)
Data were collected for more than two years during the trial, and the results were statistically analyzed for significance among the methodologies. Which methodology outperformed the others? You will find the results surprising, to say the least.

Simplified Drum-Buffer-Rope
A Whole System Approach to High Velocity Manufacturing

by Eli Schragenheim and H. William Dettmer

S-DBR is similar to traditional DBR, yet faster to implement and easier to integrate with existing ERP packages.

It is distinguished from traditional DBR by its assumption of market demand as the major system constraint, even when an internal capacity constraint temporarily emerges. This is because our future market demand will decrease if we don’t fully satisfy the requirements of the current market. In other words, how well we satisfy our customers today determines whether we'll see them in the future.

This paper reviews the basics of traditional DBR, then introduce the S-DBR model. It then describes the similarities and differences
between the two approaches, and points out the circumstances under which traditional DBR model might still be preferred.
